Komposte, Piezomikrofone, Funksender und -empfänger, Lautsprechermembranen
Niko de Paula Lefort ist Klangkünstler und Musiker. Seine Arbeit bewegt sich durch die
Bereiche Komposition, Improvisation und Performance, Radio- und Übertragungstechniken,
Instrumentenbau und Feldaufnahmen. Dabei konzentriert er sich insbesondere auf die Beziehungen, die über das Zuhören entstehen können und interessiert sich für eine ganzheitliche Betrachtung elektronischer Geräte und ihre kulturelle Bedeutung.
Für die fünfte Berlin Britzenale integriert Niko in unterschiedlichen Gärten Spezialmikrofone,
die in Komposten Geräusche aufnehmen und durch ein Übertragungssystem in
der Parzelle 26a hörbar werden. Der Kompost ist ein hochdynamischer Ort, an dem
Gartenabfälle und Biomasse zu nährstoffreichem Hummus umgewandelt werden. Hier
leben nicht nur unzählige Lebewesen, die durch das Fressen und Verdauen der Abfälle
maßgeblich für den Kompost sind, es finden auch natürliche Zerfallsprozesse statt, die
beispielsweise zu einer extremen Wärmeentwicklung führen können. Durch die technische Intervention in diesem Lebensraum macht Niko hörbar, was sich normalerweise
der menschlichen Wahrnehmung entzieht, und erfahrbar, was oftmals ungesehen bleibt.
Zugleich durchzieht er die Kleingartenanlage mit einem unsichtbaren Netz aus Radiowellen,
das sich zwischen Beeten und Lauben spannt.
Die Arbeit ist ein Verweis auf eine weit verbreitete gärtnerische Praxis, die sich in die
Diskussion um nachhaltige Handlungen einreiht, und gleichzeitig auf jene ganzheitlichen
Kreisläufe, die beim Gärtnern oftmals zum Tragen kommen. Nikos Ansatz, Alternativen
im Umgang mit Radiotechnik zu finden, ist auch ein Weg, um Übertragung über
die Mensch-Mensch-Kommunikation hinauszudenken und unterschiedliche Verbindungen
und Interspezieskommunikation anzuerkennen.

Niko de Paula Lefort is a sound artist and musician. His work moves through the fields
of composition, improvisation and performance, radio and transmission techniques,
instrument making and field recordings. Niko focuses in particular on the relationships
that can develop through listening and is interested in a holistic view of electronic
devices and their cultural significance.
For the fifth Berlin Britzenale, Niko is integrating special microphones into the composts
in various gardens, which record sounds that become audible through a transmission
system in garden plot 26a. The compost is a highly dynamic place where
garden waste and biomass are transformed into nutrient-rich humus. Not only do
countless creatures live here, which are crucial to the compost by consuming and
digesting the waste, but natural decomposition processes also take place within the
compost, which can - for example - lead to extreme heat development. Through his
technical intervention in this co-habitat, Niko makes audible what normally escapes
human perception and makes tangible what often remains unseen. At the same
time, he connects the allotment garden with an invisible network of radio waves that
stretches between beds and garden houses.
The work is also a reference to a widespread gardening practice that is part of the
discussion around sustainable actions and at the same time a hint at the holistic cycles
that often come into play in gardening. Niko's approach to finding alternatives in dealing
with radio technology is also a way of thinking about transmission beyond human-human
communication and recognizing different connections and interspecies communication.
